چکیده

“Thermal Referral (TR)” and “Thermal Grill Illusion (TGI)” are known as illusions of thermal sensation, have been well studied. In a previous study, the experiment using two thermal-tactile stimulations to the forearm revealed that those illusions simultaneously occurred. On the other hand, in the experiment result, a few subjects perceived a hot stimulation as a cold sensation or a cold stimulation as a hot sensation. This paradoxical phenomenon of thermal sensation which is not discussed specifically in the previous study could be a fatal problem in the case presenting a thermal stimulation on multiple spots intentionally. Therefore, we decided to analyze this paradoxical phenomenon. In this paper, we confirmed that this phenomenon occurs when we present thermal stimulation on two spots and three spots. And in Comparison between the results of two spots and three spots, the occurred probability increased on three spots than on two spots.

Analysis of Paradoxical Phenomenon Caused by Presenting Thermal Stimulation on Three Spots

Thermal referral (TR) and thermal grill illusion (TGI), known as illusions of thermal sensation, have been well studied. Paradoxical heat sensation in healthy subjects: peripherally conducted by Aδ or C fibres?

Paradoxical heat sensation upon cooling of the skin has been reported in central as well as in peripheral neurological conditions. In our study, we examined this phenomenon in 35 naive healthy test subjects, of whom 23 experienced paradoxical heat sensation under test conditions. We measured the peripheral conduction velocities of cold sensation, warm sensation and of paradoxical heat sensation...

Sensory determinants of thermal pain.

It is still unclear whether the quality of painful thermal sensation is determined only by conduction in specific, dedicated nociceptive channels (i.e. C or Adelta nociceptors) or whether it is a result of integrated activity in both nociceptive and non-nociceptive systems. To evaluate this question, we conducted quantitative and qualitative somatosensory testing in spinal cord injury subjects ...

Investigation of the paradoxical painful sensation ('illusion of pain') produced by a thermal grill.

A paradoxical painful sensation can be elicited by the simultaneous application of innocuous warm and cold stimuli to the skin. In the present study, we analyzed the conditions of production of this unique experimental illusion of pain in 52 healthy volunteers (27 men, 25 women). The stimuli were produced by a thermode composed of six bars whose temperature was controlled by Peltier elements. T...

Paradoxical heat sensation in patients with multiple sclerosis. Evidence for a supraspinal integration of temperature sensation.

Temperature thresholds were determined in 16 patients with probable or definite multiple sclerosis, in six patients with possible but unconfirmed multiple sclerosis and in 34 healthy subjects, using the method of limits and the thermal sensory limen (TSL) of the MarStock technique. A significant proportion of the patients had thresholds outside the 2.5 SD range for normal subjects, both for war...
